All of life can really be boiled down to two big things:
- Knowing What To Do.
- And Doing It.
The question is, “HOW?!?”. How do we know what we should do and how do we do it?
The answer to both of these questions is GOD. More specifically, God’s Word and God’s Spirit.
The Lord Jesus leads His sheep by His voice (His Word) (cf. John 10).
The power to know and do what our Lord commands comes not by might, not by power, but by the Lord’s Spirit (Zech. 4:6).
Now, I know that these are simplistic answers, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t the right answers. So, before I elaborate on any of this in the coming posts, this groundwork must be laid. We should not seek to discern or obey the Lord’s Will apart from the Word or apart from the Holy Spirit.
I end this with some good quotations:
- “… the true way to honor the Holy Spirit as our guide is to honor the Holy Scriptures through which He guides us.” (Packer, J.I. Knowing God, Ch. 20, pg. 236).
- “God has ordained that the eye-opening work of His Spirit always be combined with the mind-informing work of His Word.” (Piper, John. A Godward Life, Vol. 2, pg. 184).
- “… seek the will of the Spirit of God through, or in connection with, the Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusions…” (Muller, George. Narratives.)
- Being Radically Dependent upon the Holy Spirit is being Radically Biblical, and vise versa.
