The other day I saw a bumper sticker where all I could read was the word,”Ex-Deadman”. I have no idea what it was intending to say or what it referred to, but my mind went straight to my regneration and conversion from death to Life in Jesus Christ.
While I do think it is more positive and very appropriate to say that as Christians we are new creations in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:10), that we are alive in Christ (Romans 6; Galatians 2:20), and so on, I also think it is good and quite Biblical to think of ourselves as “Ex-Deadmen” (Eph. 2:1-10).
We do well to remember that we have passed from death to life (I John 3:14). Remember how we have been regenerated(born again/born from above, raised to life, quickened) and converted. If we cannot recall how drastically different we are in Christ now that we are alive in Him, then we should call in to question whether or not we have been regenerated and converted at all.
“Long my imprisioned spirit lay,
Held fast by sin and nature’s night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
The dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.”
